April 8 – 9 Victoria River Roadhouse

April 11, 2018 - Reading time: ~1 minute

Only a two hundred Kilometres drive from Katherine on bitumen. Alan and Sara had told us to watch out for the landscape changes- from savannah to escarpment and Mesa country – it was fascinating to watch. The Victoria River starts in the central Australian Desert country and runs for over 800 kms into the Bonaparte Gulf. It would be an awesome sight in flood with the new bridge being 20 metres above the river level and twice since it opened in 2001 it has been blocked.

We got up early on Monday and drove to the escarpment walk, which while being just over 3 kms in length was quite challenging, due to the overgrown grass, steep inclines and high temperatures (37 when we finished at 10.30). However, it was certainly worth the effort and provided wide sweeping views across the flood plains to the river.
