March 6 – 10 Speeds Point, Yanerbie

March 16, 2018 - Reading time: 2 minutes

Well after much discussion we chose our camp site, reasonably well protected ( it is blowing 30 to 40kph) good sun for the solar and truly million dollar views for $10 per night. High tide is at 4pm and the fishing rigs are set up, bait selected and we are keen! Speeds point is reasonably well protected from the southerly winds –although Al who is also camping here felt that we were wasting our time, we kindly accepted his donation of a bag of cockles and set off! After 3 casts and a number of bites we landed our first fish – unfortunately this was a small wrasse who was returned. One hour later we had two king George whiting with one released (just under legal) and one Tommy Ruff in addition a number of small salmon trout which were released.

Had a lovely walk along the headland of Speeds Point looking to find a path down the cliff face to a beautiful looking whiting hole, and then along the beach in the direction of Fisherman’s Paradise ( it is a real town – promise). Hopefully tomorrow we will manage to bypass the rocks which stopped us this morning.

I mentioned above our exploration for a path down into a potential Whiting hole. Well we found the path and I am pleased to say that it lived up to its potential, providing us with some excellent King George Whiting and to our surprise a beautiful flathead – all the fish we kept were in the 38cm to 40 cm range- and it was enough fish for three nights of meals!

We have had a wonderful time here at Speeds, with for the most part only one other camp site which was about 150 metres away. At this stage it is one of those places we would visit again – even perhaps after we cross the Nullarbor on the way home.
