Waltzing Matilda Centre – Winton June 14/15

June 19, 2020 - Reading time: ~1 minute

Banjo Patterson wrote Waltzing Matilda often referred to as Australia’s unofficial National Anthem in 1891 and and was first performed it in Winton. The Waltzing Matilda centre gives an insight into the origins of the story, plus a feeling of understanding the area, from it’s first nation days through the frontier wars, into the sheep industry, industrial relations battles and the slow decline of the town/district over the last thirty years.

The architecture of the town is fascinating with many of the older structures surviving, giving the town of a yesterday feeling. The Corfield & Fitzmaurice building and the Tattersal Hotel, which also serves wonderful meals are excellent examples of Nineteenth century Queensland construction. Image description
