Had another lovely drive down the Indian Ocean drive, from Dongara to Jurien Bay and onto Cervantes where we turned East and headed out to Nambung Station and the Nambung National Park home of the Pinnacles. Our aim was to explore the wildflowers which the area has a reputation of being one of the best spots to view them as well as visit ‘The Pinnacles’ and Painted Desert of the National Park.
Had a tremendous day driving on the wildflower way, which took over five hours and included two great walks. We are always amazed at the wide variety of flowers, in this area the focus seems to be on small trees and scrubs.
Wednesday night was extremely cold but we woke at seven hoping to visit the ‘Pinnacles National Park’ with Sonia but unfortunately they had to postpone to Thursday, so instead we drove into Jurien Bay to refill a gas bottle and have morning tea at the bakery and onto ‘ Mt Lesueur National Park’. Mt Lesueur is once again famous for its wildflowers, which were in full bloom!
Another cold early start as Sonia (station manager) picked us up in the open farm car/tractor. First stop was to give a bottle of milk to the 2 little lambs- so cute! Then we headed out around the station/fences and paddocks. Cows and new calves very cute, Roos and emus. Arrived at the back fence of the station, which backs onto Nambung NP, and we entered the Painted Desert Walk, up a steep sand dune and into a new world! We have never seen such amazing sand dunes, massive and stretching as far as we could see, at least 10km to the West. Pillars of sandstone Pinnacles popped up, some a few inches high, others towering over our heads! Sonia was a wealth of knowledge and we learnt so much about the Pinnacles and the wildlife. Some of the formations, the blowing sand had just revealed, whilst others in the last 6 months have disappeared!
