May 21 – 27 Broome and Quandong Point free camp 30 kms north of Broome

May 28, 2018 - Reading time: 2 minutes

With the Gibb River road completed a week ahead of schedule due to the Kalumburu Rd and Charnley being closed we decided to drive to Broome, have a massage, organise some appointments, wash the car, restock the food and water and then setup camp at Quandong Point 30 kms north of Broome.

Our first experience of Broome was one of appreciation, despite the cloudy and overcast weather ( unseasonal). The town is quite spread out and does not appear to have a CBD as such – the prison and airport are both in the centre with Chinatown to the east, Roebuck Bay to the southeast, and Cable Beach to the west.

We had a very ,limited exploration but Matso’s brewery will be on the return list. Very nice beer and good food!

To reach Quandong Point you take the Cape Levque Rd for 16 kms ( mostly dirt and quite rough) turn onto the Menari Rd for 12 kms and then another turn left for 2 kms. There are absolutely no facilities here so this is our largest setup in quite a while, with both the shower and toilet in operation, plus we have for the first set up the Vista wall on the trailer to protect us from the onshore breezes. Still it took us just under an hour to have everything set up and ready to relax.

Quandong Point is almost a locality rather than a location from a camping perspective with little roads of into the scrub, stretching over 5 kms. We have a site on top of the cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, with two campsites about 100 metres away in both directions – brilliant as it is free!

On our first full day we had a good stroll south along the beach, locating some fossilised ferns and dinosaur footprints. The fishing was disappointing initially. While the fishing was disappointing today, we saw a bait ball go past being chased by some much larger fish (Maurs using her binoculars thought they were dolphins), all up the feeding frenzy lasted for at least 30 minutes.

We loved our time at Quandong, it was unfortunate that the fishing was poor – not a single nibble, however it was an extremely relaxing stay with staggering beautiful sunsets. Image description Sunset Image description Dinosaur footprints
