February 26 - 28 Memory Cove

March 2, 2018 - Reading time: 3 minutes

If Surfleet was the entrée then Memory Cove was intended to be the main course! The drive in reminded me in some ways of the old road into Jim Jim Falls prior to Kakadu being proclaimed a national park. 35 kilometres in length it took just under 90 minutes (mostly second and third) to arrive, along the way we had emus cantering in front of the car at 25 kmph for about a km and then Kangaroos bounding up hills at Jussieu Bay lookout.

Our campsite sat 10 metres from the beach in a beautiful area surrounded by an amazing rugged terrain, with both good shade and sun. The beach was calm and according to Maurs had the most amazing soft white sand ever! The water was a beautiful azure blue which in about thirty metres transformed to a much deeper green. It was however quite cold, but we tolerated it while fishing! Maureen actually did swim a number of times, however Paul was a wuss!. It is interesting how tame the wildlife is – we had a beautiful kangaroo hop up to our site , look at us and then feed for about 10 minutes, with no concern in the world casually hopped away when full!

We tried our hand at fishing for snapper (a number of bites) but we lost two rigs quickly, although we did have a number of bites…. No hits like we would get in QLD more a tap tap tap… any feedback would be appreciated! We then turned to fishing for whiting but alas with very similar results, only a few small wrasse was the result.

The walk around the headland was spectacular… apparently Flinders lost 6 sailors just out of the cove and watching the ocean from the headland it was not difficult to see how! While the cove itself is protected most days, a strong south easterly breeze would be interesting! A number of yachts sheltered in the Bay on Tuesday afternoon and that evening a very south westerly hit – it felt like at times it was going to carry the camper away.

As we drove out on Thursday morning we both expressed a deep sense of connection, and certainly our memories will be strong.
