Lovely drive from Jingellic along the Murray to Albury and onto Rutherglen. On the way in we planned to visit the Gehrig winery and then Morris, with a particular interest with tasting Durif which has become my favourite grape. Unfortunately, Gehrig has closed but Morris was everything we had expected with a very good Durif and excellent Topaque and Muscat. Stanton’s Bend is a lovely campsite along the Murray about 10 kilometres from Rutherglen, situated among a large number of river gums (need to check out carefully- widow makers). We visited warrabilla winery after setting up camp and got two excellent bottles of their Reserve Durif, which we preferred to the more expensive Parola label.
We woke to a beautiful river sunrise and a large number of screaming cockatoos! Had a wonderful day exploring the region and three entirely different but interesting wineries, Pfeiffers, Chambers and Stanton and Killeen, with the highlight being a Chambers 1999 vintage ruby port which cost the grand sum of $10…. After having difficulty getting the cork out it was magnificent. As we quietly sipped the port, watching the stars in the clear sky, I realised how lucky we are to be able to have this experience.
