How did we end up here?
As we departed Karumba at 8.28 this morning all the plans were to be heading east and to Croydon tonight. However, the ABC radio reported that the Burke Shire had opened. A quick detour to the Karumba information centre firstly, confirmed the news – however they had no idea if Boodjamulla National Park (Lawn Hill) was opening! ( it is often referred to as the jewel in the crown of QLD national parks)
We decided to take the risk – heading 300 kms west following the Savannah Way – a truly great drive. The landscape constantly changing, brolgas, black cockatoos in vast numbers, cattle, creek beds, red dirt savannah plains and the odd historical site.
In 2019, we visited the famous Burke and Will’s dig tree just outside modern Innamincka and today we were able to stop and reflect on both their bravery and stupidity at their last campsite (119 almost at the Gulf) - before they made a short dash to be the first to transverse the continent south to north, but perish on their way home. Also stopped into the stunning Leichardt Falls - see if you can spott the crocs in the photo! One freshie and a saltie
Now at Burketown and moving onto a free camp son the Gregory river down at Gregory Downs, while we wait for Boodjamulla to open – hopefully Monday!
