April 10 – 11 Timber Creek WIRIB

April 11, 2018 - Reading time: 2 minutes

Arrived here at just after 11am. Originally we had hoped to go to Jasper Gorge but have decided to stay here for two nights and drive into Jasper tomorrow without the trailer. Incredibly hot 37 at midday, rose to 38 but the pool cooled us down.

Did the sights around town including Gregory’s boab tree which he inscribed on September 2 1856. We decided to drive out to Jasper Gorge which is approximately 60kms South East of here- it was one of our intended camp sites on the Binns Track. It was a reasonable road – deflated the tyres to 30ppsi ( front) and 36ppsi ( rear) hot and managed to average about 60 kmph with some great potholes, jump ups and only a few corrugations.

Jasper Gorge is famous for the battles that took place there between the settlers and indigenous Australians. The settlers needed to access the water for the cattle and the gorges gave the First Nation people a superb point to attack. This resistance went until the early 1920s but some of our politicians and political commentators still deny this.

Remembering this, the gorge is both imposing and beautiful, the red cliffs tower over the billabongs and waterholes, we saw one Boab tree which was significantly bigger ( therefore older?) then the Gregory tree mentioned above. It also ‘ sounded like traffic on a six lane highway’ according to Maureen. It certainly contained a bee hive or wasps nest which you could easily hear from ten metres away.

This afternoon we were blessed with a quick down pour, unfortunately while it provided some relief from the heat the humidity has soared. Image description Magnificent Boab Tree Image description The Buchanan Highway
