July 25 – 31 Alau Beach

Azure Blue seas –, Trevally smashing flicking poppers, palm cockatoos quietly eating nuts on the ground - dogs and horses wandering through the campground!

Alau is a beach campground located in Umagico about 8 kms from Bamaga. We chose Alau because only three campsites were in use when we visited, we had water views and very good access to the sun to keep everything powered up. We did notice the dogs but wikicamps and the people camped there said if you ignore them they go away.

Seven wonderful days to explore and fish the Top of Cape York. Had a great trip over to Thursday Island and could not believe it is so small. Apparently, it was chosen to be the administrative headquarters of Torres Strait, due to its being protected from the dominant prevailing winds, by other Islands including the much bigger Horn and Prince of Wales.

Finally, how lovely was it to wander down to the rocks, throw a few poppers for 30 minutes or so and walk back with two nice giant trevally for tea, or wake up each morning to watch the Palm cockatoos feeding. Simply, superb!
