Barcaldine, Lara Wetlands June 11 -13

Landsborough Highway north of Blackall – dry, desolate cattle country – 13 kms west, green grass, artesian pools, plentiful birdlife. Lara wetlands is a private campground surrounding a man made lake which is fed by an artesian spring. It is quite unique and we had three lovely nights, with unexpected rain on the last night.

The pond attracts a wide variety of bird life and we sighted kookaburras, Pale headed Rosella, Black tailed Native hens, tree creepers, stilts and ducks. The camps are incredibly well spread out with amenities well located around the lake.

Lara wetlands is a wonderful camping spot for families and as a base for exploring Barcaldine, the home of the tree of knowledge, the shearer’s strike of the 1890’s and formation of the Australian labour movements. These events played a significant role in the development of the
