Denham is a lovely little seaside town indeed the most western ton in Australia and is the gateway to Francois Peron National Park and Dirk Hartog Island located on the beautiful waters of Shark Bay. Unfortunately the road to Dirk Hartog Island is closed for the month of August and it will need to be an adventure for the future.
Two hundred kilometres West from here in 1941 the HMAS Sydney was sung here after a battle with the German pocket battleship the ‘Kororaman’ and lost with all hands. The wreck was located in the last five years and there is a beautiful monument to the ship and crew here.
Once again we are using Denham as a restocking location with the the issue being water, which is very scarce here. Indeed it was not included in our booking at the Caravan Park, however the council provide it at a cost of $1 for twenty litres!
The highlight of Denham for us was going out to dinner at the ‘Old Pearler Restaurant ‘ to celebrate 200 days on the road. We had a superb seafood platter which included local bugs, lobster, oysters, prawns and a selection of local fish. It was both superb in taste and excellent value, and was served without chips ( Watson’s should take note). The restaurant building was made out of bricks mined from Shell beach. Each brick is the result of compacting Mollusc shells into shape. It last been standing for well over one hundred years and was amazingly warm ( no heating) on a cold night!
