Francois Peron National Park is only 3 kms from Denham and it is only a further 19 kms in to the Big Lagoon campground. The journey all up takes about an hour mainly due to needing to lower the tyres down to 20 psi or lower to cope with the sandy roads.
Big Lagoon is a beautiful place, but like nearly all of WA ( windy always?) is open to high winds. It has a very deep central channel with wide sand banks on which turtles, dugongs and stingrays can be seen
It was superb for our first two days and we cashed in with two wonderful walks around the bay, fishing ( no luck) and just wandering around the sand dunes, where we occasionally picked up an Optus or Telstra signal. We also had a visitor or two, in particular a Shark Bay native mouse – they are really a marsupial and are extremely small and cute as you can see below. Fortunately they are not like domestic mice and do not enjoy our pantry box.
We drove up to Cape Peron and Skip Jack Point where we were lucky enough to see a Bilby – which is another first. The view at Cape Peron is spectacular, with red dunes meeting the blue sea and you can watch dolphins, dugongs, sharks mantra rays having a feed.
