November 17 – 18 Rawnsley Park Station

November 28, 2018 - Reading time: ~1 minute

Had a great drive to Hawker via Cradock where we visited the only building still standing in the town where our great grand parents settled in the 1880s, hoping to plant wheat! The government of the day believed ‘that if you ploughed the land it would rain’ and sold land accordingly in semi desert country. Unfortunately, for our ancestors this proved a fallacy and they struggled to survive. Today the publican of the hotel runs 3,500 sheep over 30,000 acres or 1 sheep per 10 acres!

After a beer or soft drink we continued on our way to Rawnsley Park station where we would be based for the next two nights. Michael abandoned us for the comfort of the cabin with Anne and Neil but Helen remained strong and camped with us under the stars, which were quite spectacular when the moon went down.

We had a great walk into Wilpena Pound and a very enjoyable drive to Blinman an old Copper mining town. Our Australian ancestors were incredibly tough men and women!
