Wonderful drive in from Undara as the countryside slowly changed from Savannah to a more tropical green interspersed with rainforest. We chose Yungaburra as our base due to its location on Lake Tinaroo and it’s close proximity to the Table land villages of Millaa Millaa, Malanda, Mareeba and Atherton.
It was in hindsight a very good choice, as we were able to focus on one village and its surrounds each day. The highlights were the walks around the various lakes and waterfalls, which were mostly the results of volcanic activity approximately ten thousand years ago. These were stunning in their beauty!
Additionally, we visited some local farms and tasted the produce, particularly cheese, chocolate and Nerada Tea. On these occasions what tended to stand out where the magnificent mountain streams and creeks with their dense rainforest vegetation that only seemed to extend ten metres either side before the farm paddocks took over again. A definite highlight here was seeing platypus in their natural habitat. These cute little marsupials delighted us so much so that we went back a second dusk to see them!
Finally, we used the time to restock the pantry, check out the condition of the car as we began the preparation for our trip to the top of Australia.
