April 15 – 18 Kimberleyland Caravan Park on Lake Kununurra

April 25, 2018 - Reading time: 2 minutes

Kununurra is an interesting town, created in 1961 as part of the Ord River scheme and home of the famous Pink Diamonds. Our main activity here was a fishing charter with Northbound Fishing charters, which we had booked over six months ago. Matt the tour guide and owner gave us a great day! Maureen caught three Barra, all beautiful looking fish but unfortunately all just under size. I got two superb bites and on both occasions had the fish next to the boat, but lost them there to underwater head rolls- the first was according to Matt between 70 and 80 cms while the second was ( again according to Matt) over a metre. Unfortunately these were not my only two significant bites as I also hooked a three metre saltie! Lost him as well. Much to Matt’s relief!!!

On Tuesday we visited Mirima National Park which is located just outside of town (1km). The landscape here was said to much in the mound of a mini bungles and did not disappoint. We then moved out to the irrigation area and visited the Sandalwood factory a great display of Sandalwood and magnificent thickshakes. Just down the road there is a rum distillery ‘Hoochery’ which obviously required a visit even though it is one of the few alcoholic beverages that Maurs does not drink! Purchased a paddle for $10 Great rum but very expensive and outside my price bracket!

On our way back into town we decided to do some shopping and visited the two diamond shops – I was tempted to outlay $400,000 for two pink Argyle diamonds for Maureen but she talked me out of it! They were circles of about 3 mm diameter. We also visited the Zebra rock factory where Bruce the owner passionately shared knowledge of the geology of the area and we ended up with a nice necklace.
