Walkers Rocks – Elliston March 1-2

March 2, 2018 - Reading time: 2 minutes

On departing Port Lincoln we continued our trek across the bottom of the Eyre Peninsula and set up camp at Walkers Rock. For $10 per night we got to choose our waterfront site, and access to a toilet and cold water shower. It is a great deal!

Setting up was a major problem as many of the ants(thousands) from Memory Cove so enjoyed ‘Myrtle’ that they hopped on for the trip. This meant that we had to remove both side tarps and the tropical roof, as we attempted to locate and eradicate their trails! They were everywhere, yet we had not noticed them at Memory Cove!

After the hour plus set up we had a well deserved beer and went for a walk along the beach. It is a beautiful beach stretching for miles along the southern ocean. After some observations we determined that on Friday we would try our hand at picking up a flathead or perhaps a King George Whiting.

After breakfast, we explored the Scenic cliff top drive at Elliston. It was amazing, watching the ocean pound the cliffs with huge waves, surfers treading warily down 70 metres of cliff face, carrying their boards, then paddling 200 metres off shore, across the reef to reach the break. Then they rode the waves for 50 metres or so, which meant that they did not have to repeat the effort of getting back out. Just behind them a pod of dolphins played their own merry game. There was a memorial to a young surfer who lost his life to shark attach here four or five years ago. (Great white country)

After such strenuous exercise, I determined that we had not visited a South Australian pub since Arno Bay and so we had a delightful beer, while the publican and the local footy club organised a reunion! Country towns… reminded me very much of Ayr and the Kalamia and Queen hotels.

Unfortunately, our fishing once again ended in despair! The amount of weed in the water is amazing! Perhaps Streaky Bay and ‘fishing in undies’ will bring better luck!
