Friday October 12 - 21 Cape Le Grand National Park – Lucky Bay Campground

Well after having a little whiny about the Esperance Park, we have once again scored well with our site here. On arrival we were greeted by three kangaroos quietly having a feed at the back of our site, which is partly protected from the onshore breezes by a large tree and then lovely views across the bay. All this at half the cost of the caravan park back in Esperance – Western Australian National Parks are very very good and excellent value!

We have had some wonderful walks, across the headland to Thistle Cove, along the beach towards Rossiter’s beach and a superb lookout. The park is significantly different to Fitzgerald River while both share the beautiful shades of Blue water, the beaches here are dominated by the granite headlands and rocks that go to the water levels. In addition the reef that protected the Fitzgerald park has ended here, and is replaced with a huge archipelago of granite islands. These range from tiny dots in the ocean to quite big islands. It makes for a spectacle when the seas are high! On the mainland rocks here you see anchor points that Rock fishermen tie themselves to to avoid being washed away!

The weather was quite variable we had on two or three days winds in the 40/50 kph range, rain and then some beautiful days with the temperatures reaching 27! And it could change very quickly. One morning we awoke to overcast skies, strong wind and some drizzle, yet by midday it was glorious.

Many campers here seemed to stay only one or two nights and moved on to either cross the Nullabor, or move onto Esperance, either way it would appear to me that they did not get the benefit of the area.

Intending to stay 5 nights, we checked out Cape Arid(further east).. Whilst nice, we decided to spend the whole time at Lucky Bay! We did a lot of extra walks, and fishing, with varying degrees of success! Maureen also went for a swim in the Southern Ocean! Ffffffff-freezing!

Camp hosts Murray and Irene became good mates and it was sad to leave our ‘mini holiday’ within our holiday! Iced chocolate on the beach at Lucky Bay View from the headland overlooking the campground and Lucky Bay
