This is a paid camping ground located just outside the Uluru National Park and since you have no choice everything here is expensive! We paid for two nights and got the third free so $90 was not too bad.
We set up camp and began our cleanup campaign, cleaning the dust out of the back of the Ute, even going so far as to hose over the car. We then went for a drive out to the sunset, sunrise viewing areas, around the rock, walked into the Mutitjula Waterhole and the town centre to plan how we were going to attack the next two days.
On Saturday we got up at 5.45am and drove out to view the sunrise – with hundreds of others and it was worth the effort. Talking to a few other tourists many fly in for the sunset viewing, get up for the sunrise viewing have a drive in a tourist bus around it visit the Olgas and then fly out! Very rushed! We headed to Kata Tjuta – The Olga’s. we completed two great walks firstly, into Valley of the winds and then into Walpa Gorge which was spectacular. We finished both walks by 10.30am which was great as the temperature soared to 42 degrees Celsius by mid afternoon. The remainder of the day was a walk to the pool regularly to lower the body temp. Finished a great day tailgating as we viewed the sunset at Uluru.
Once again, we rose early to attempt the base walk of ten kms around the base of Uluru. We started at 8am where the rock climb starts heading in a clockwise direction to maximise our time in the shade. This was truly a great experience just as rewarding as climbing it forty years ago.
We left Ayers Rock resort pleased with what we had done, and headed into Alice Springs with the aim of organising services for the car, trailer and Paul.
